About Us
English Portuguese
This community of Portuguese families started with individuals that came to the former county of Kent starting as far back as 1956 and who remember the values and culture that they brought to this wonderful country that took us in and invited us to be part of the greater family of Canada. We have grown and integrated into this wonderful country by sharing our culture, custom and language with our fellow Canadian brothers and sisters. In 1977 the community met at the St. Ursula’s school gym in the former city of Chatham and organized as a formal group which elected a president a treasurer and secretary with the purpose to organize social events were the community could come together as a whole. The group continued to expand and rented facilities so members could come and commune on a daily basis with others. We also held executive meetings and elected new executive every year at these facilities. However, when we wanted to hold functions such as dances or we had visits from Portuguese government officials we would rent facilities through out the former city of Chatham and the former town of Wallace burg.

In 1981 at a rented small two room club house at 335 Queen Street in Chatham, we decided that we needed to incorporate and so in October 29, 1981 we became known as the Portuguese Canadian Social Club of Chatham. This would give us clear vision to take us into the future. We also started to discuss and look for potential property to obtain permanent facilities. In the mid 1980’s we purchased the property at 344 and 346 Grand Ave East in Chatham with member funds and with the idea that this would be where we would build our new home.

In 1997 we opened our current facilities with Bill Erickson the late mayor of the former City of Chatham officiating. This facility was completely built with funds and volunteer labour from the Portuguese community. The property is currently assessed at approximately one million dollars. The facility is used for cultural events, social gatherings, fund raisers, weddings, business meetings, mayoral debates, Portuguese government officials’ visits, voting stations and many other different functions. Our main source of income is derived from rental monies and membership dues.

We have since acquired additional property immediately on both sides of our facility. Primarily because the land became available due to natural circumstances however we have visions and ideas that we want to implement as the community and its needs continue to grow. And the story continues...
